The competition raised vital funds for the Australian Red Cross wartime services. Nancy-Bird Walton was the 'Air’ Queen candidate and raised 143,000 votes in 5 minutes during one address at the Australian Hotel. Her campaign office was at, Suite 801-2 in the Shell Building, Carrington Street, Sydney with the Royal Australian Air Force, RAAF, supporting her candidature, with an ‘objective one and a quarter million votes at 1d each’, at the rate of one penny per vote. During WWII and coinciding around this time, Nancy was a commandant in the Women’s Air Training Corps, leading a camp at Sundown Camp, Avalon Beach. Nine other candidates representing other groups and regions participated in the Queen's Competition, with committees organising fetes, dances, raffles and merchandise to help raise funds. Local newspapers used friendly banter to report on the tallies throughout the competition, raising over £80,000 as part of the Red Cross Appeal
