She was an expert on intertidal zones, and her career led her to become one of the first female scientists to visit Macquarie Island. She was highly awarded, receiving both an honorary master and doctorate, and she worked tirelessly from her first position at the University of Sydney in 1933. Bennett was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1984
