Harper taught at Newport Public School from 1902-1918. The letter reads as follows – 'Mr & Mrs Harper & Family; Dear All; This is a grand country; at the present, but it is as immoral; as Egypt and the villages smell; pretty bad but the country is; beautiful everything looking; open and warm weather, only; it has fallen cloudy and damp; air today Empire Day.; From; no 4544; Corp. C. ld. Porter; 14th Reinforcement; 3 Battalion; 1st QDBD; S17BEF; France; 24/5/16; To Mr & Mrs Harper and Family. To Commemorate; my being in France on the 24th May 1916; fighting for liberty.
