Thomas Scott and his family leased 20 ha at Crystal Bay in the late 1820s where he built a house near present day Bardo Road.
This land was later purchased by Daniel Farrell and leased to his sister and brother-in-law Sarah and John Collins and on almost the same site at Scotts original house they built the first Newport Hotel in 1880.
