AuthorJohn MorcombeDateOctober 2018DescriptionFor more than 50 years, on a hill overlooking Newport Beach, stood a school that attracted students from all over the state The school was usually known as the Newport Summer School and was the brainchild of David Stewart, who was a driving force in the NSW Workers’ Education Association, or WEA.
The first three-week summer school took place in December 1924 and January 1925 and included lectures on “The Influence of Geographical Factors in History,” “The Functions of Government and Local Government,” “The Psychology of the Family and Religion,” “The Founding of Sydney and Discovery of Pittwater” and “The Rights of Public Servants.”
In February 1960, the summer school was the site of the third annual conference of the Federal Council for Aboriginal Advancement at which one of the guest speakers was future prime minister Gough Whitlam, who was asked to explain the relevant clauses relating to Aboriginal people in the Australian Constitution.MenuPlace | Suburbs N-P | Newport (N.S.W.)SubjectsSchoolsKeywordsSydney University
