Record numberLH010757Datec1885DescriptionThe Fairview Estate, Manly, was auctioned on Saturday, November 14, 1885 by Mills and Pile, auctioneers. Terms were 10% down and the balance in 12 quarterly payments at 5% interest. A brochure publicising the auction was issued, with this extract relating to the sketch, Perhaps in the whole world there is no prospect so beautiful as that which is to be obtained from Fairview, just above Mr Broad’s house. The view facing to the south shows North Harbour with boats moving up and down the Cove, headlands, and the Macquarie Lighthouse, New South Wales first lighthouse, on the skyline. To the left, centre, Quarantine point can be seen, and the, bright side, of Manly with the villas and mansions of Smedley, Griffin, Coombes, Watson, and Doctor Milford. Various points can be seen to the right and the heights of Woollahra. The brochure records Mr Broad's garden was filled with flowers, ferns and palms with the land opposite being reserved from its borders to the water’s edge, so that nothing could be built between there and the harbour
