In 1883, Dalley was appointed Attorney General and was one of NSW’s leading parliamentarians and barristers. After the death of his wife, he bought Manly Heights, the land on Constitution Hill around the stone camera obscura tower on Crescent Street, and built a Gothic Revival castle there, Dallley's Castle.
