He never lived in Manly but was very influential in the area. He bought the Manly ferry operation in 1875 from Captain Thomas Heselton, and was the head figure of the Port Jackson Steamship Company, as managing director and major shareholder, and director of the later Port Jackson Co-operative Steamship Company Ltd from 1896 to 1904. Carey also purchased the lease of the Manly pier, giving him exclusive use.
