AuthorMichelle RichmondDateApril 2023DescriptionOne of North Manly's earliest houses, built by Thomas Wilson, became the scene of a terrible accident in the 1870s when Mrs Frances Kirby or Kerbey's dress caught alight while she was baking bread. She was burnt beyond hope and died that night. From then on tales of a women's scream coming from the house led to the site being called haunted. When the house was set on fire, over a rental dispute, the ghostly ruins only increased the haunted tales. By 1909 however Arthur T. Keirle, one time Mayor of Manly, purchased the suite and not being at all intimidated by the ghost stories, built a beautiful house for himself on the ruins called Fairmont.SubjectsNorth Manly (N.S.W.)KeywordsAustral Avenue
