Record numberLH010380Datec1888DescriptionThe Camera Obscura Tower, also known as Cole's Royal Camera Obscura, at the entrance to Manly Wharf, Manly. It was designed by engineer and architect EW Cracknell, of Bond Street Chambers, Sydney, and built by Henry A Middleton of Manly, c1887. It housed mirrors that reflected various views, however the installation didn't prove to be too popular and the structure was converted to shops around five years later. It was demolished in 1900 during the arrival of the plague to Manly. The photograph is of a drawing that appeared in the Australasian Builder and Contractor's News, October 20, 1888. There was a second Camera Obscura in Manly, the stone tower below Dalley's Castle, built by HG Smith in 1856.
