Record numberLH010369Date1918DescriptionA panoramic scene showing the junction of Belgrave Street, The Corso, and East Esplanade, Manly, with from the left, the Grand Pier Hotel, Manly Town Hall, the 1910 Australian Bank of Commerce, and Manly Wharf and Clock Tower, with horse drawn cabs and motor vehicles. The Grand Pier Hotel stood opposite Manly Wharf for around 70 years before being demolished in 1925, becoming the Hotel Manly in 1926. The Manly Town Hall, with Town Hall gardens, and no welcome sign, can be seen in the centre, formerly the building, Llangollen, built in 1879 by prominent Manly resident, W.H. Rolfe. It was purchased in 1909 for 5,000 pounds, from A. J. S. Bank, and demolished in 1937, when the present building was erected on site. The 1913-14 Castlevennon, a historic art deco landmark building at 1 The Corso, is next door, along with the Manly War Memorial. Various shops, including Mathew Chemist and White Bros General Merchants, can be seen at the western end of The Corso. The Bank of Commerce dominates the centre of the image, with East Manly Cove beach to the right, and the Edwardian style Manly Wharf.
