Record numberLH010366Date25 January 1908DescriptionPanoramic view facing north, during the world's first Surf Carnival, held on 25 January 1908 at Manly Beach. It was estimated that the crowds were at 20,000, and took every possible vantage point to view the action, including positioned in front of Montagu House on the hillside on Ashburner Street, later to become the home of the Manly Grammar School for Girls. Dignitaries and guests including the former Premier of NSW, Charles Wade, and State Ministers attended the event. The first ever surfboat race was held, with six clubs competing, won by Little Coogee (later Clovelly). Six clubs competed in an interclub life saving competition, including Bondi, Manly, Maroubra, Newcastle, North Steyne, won by Bondi. Many other festivities and competitions were held and an exhibition was given by the Sly Brothers, being a rescue by surfboat and life line in the breakers
