Visible in the background, left, second quadrant of the image, is Montagu House in Ashburner Street, later to become the home of the Manly Grammar School for Girls, with other historic houses also visible on the hillside. There were crowds of 50,000 people witnessed on the day and the carnival included processions of surf clubs, in costumes and persons in fancy dress, entertainment including a fancy dress cricket match on Manly Oval, a performance by, The Dandies, a fancy dress skating carnival at the Palace rink and guest night at the Arcadia Picture Theatre
