A white flag with the Southern Cross in the top left hand corner is set as a backdrop. The celebration was aimed towards schoolchildren and young people, who were given a half day after the celebrations. It later became known as Commonwealth Day in 1958, and the date of festivities changed to Queen Elizabeth II birthday in 1966. The occasion became less popular around 1970
