The building was designed by renowned architect Edmund Blacket, to be in the form of a cross, with a 75 foot bell tower, which stood as a landmark for over 60 years. The foundation stone was laid on 6 July 1864 and it was consecrated in 1865. The building was demolished in 1928, to build the new St Matthew’s Church
