Wakehurst Parkway official opening 1946

Record number62275DateMarch 1946DescriptionIn March 1946, eight months before it was finished, NSW premier William McKell officially opened the road, naming it Wakehurst Parkway in honour of the recently-retired NSW governor, Lord Wakehurst. He unveiling a large plaque set in a boulder near the Narrabeen end of the parkway and another on a monument at the Seaforth end of the parkway. It was the first road in NSW to be called a parkway. Work began in the 1930s but was halted when WW II broke out.
