Record number63320Datec1914DescriptionIsaac Larkin was born in 1865 and arrived in Australia in 1887 on the ship “Orizaba” from London via Adelaide, Melbourne, then disembarked in Sydney. He studied to become an orchardist at Ryde and then looked around for his own land. In 1893 Isaac married Florence Nina Bailey at Burwood, NSW, and the couple soon after moved from Ryde to Manly, where five of their seven children were born. For a time Isaac was site foreman of the now defunct Powderworks site, established by Carl Von Bieren at Ingleside to manufacture blasting powder and gunpowder. Isaac put his horticultural skills to use looking after the orchard on the Powderworks property. Soon after they purchased their own farm, ‘Waratah Farm’ on Mona Vale Road not far from the corner of Gordon Road (now Mona Vale Road) and Powderworks Road. Isaac Larkin was a gifted orchardist and his farm did extremely well growing stonefruit, citrus fruits, passion vines and figs. He also bred a new variety of plum, what became known as the Narrabeen Plum. After World War I the family changed the name of their property to ‘The Pines’ as it was surrounded by Pine trees.
