The caption to the photo has mistranscribed the name Baxter as Bayton.

Major Walter Baxter was living at Coorabel, 35 Smith Street, Manly with wife Eliza. He was born on 29 October 1861, and educated at Goulburn Grammar School. He was a boot manufacturer in civilian life.

He enlisted as Major on 7 May 1915, and was invalided home with pneumonia and bronchitis on 4 October 1915. He was reappointed on 1 April 1917 in charge of sea transports, and terminated his service on 14 November 1917.
