Arthur joined the Army on 16th January 1915. He was discharged on 22nd April 1915 with appendicitis. Arthur re-enlisted on 1st November 1916 at 25 years and 11 months old. His next of kin his father August Beckman resided in Manly. Arthur was a carpenter by trade and also a station hand at Wellshot station, Queensland.

Arthur embarked at Sydney on the Demosthenes in 1916 and returned on the Themistocles on 12th June 1919. He was discharged on 18th August 1919.
