Basil was born in Crookwell, New South Wales and was 19 years old at enlistment on 24thAugust 1914. Basil was a machinery expert by trade. His mother Mrs. J. Broderick lived at 39 Corso, Manly.

While in service Basil was admitted to hospital for measles and was also wounded in action in Belgium on the 20th October 1917. On the 6th November 1917 he was gassed with mustard gas and again admitted to hospital.

Basil returned to Australia on the Runic on 14th February 1918 and was discharged on 13th March 1918 due to medical unfitness from gas poisoning.

Basil’s brother Hilary John Broderick who enlisted with him was killed at Lone Pine. The photo is mis-captioned ‘C Broderick’.
