Sydney Roland Brown was born in Manly. He gave his address at enlistment as Belgrave Street, Manly and his mother Martha Brown as next of kin. Sydney was a carter by trade. Sydney was 25 years and 5 months at enlistment on the 23rd August 1915.

Sydney was admitted to hospital in Cairo for a mild illness in February 1916; he then joined the 4th Field Supply depot in France on 6th September 1916.

He returned to Australia per the Beltana on 2ndJune 1919 and was discharged due to medical unfitness on 25th December 1920.
