Willie Brown enlisted on 8 March 1915. He was a printer to trade, and lived at Austral Avenue, North Manly. He served at Gallipoli and was hospitalized at Malta. He then served in France and Belgium.

He was admitted to hospital with shellshock in July 1916. He had a spell in hospital with VD in 1917. On 29 May 1918 he was hospitalized with gas poisoning.

He returned to Australia on the Devonin October 1919. He applied for the Anzac medallion in 1967 from a North Manly address.
