John Buckley was born in Balmain on 6th August 1885 and his father John George lived at Freshwater. John was a stereotyper by trade and was 20 years old at the time of enlistment on 9th August 1915.

John embarked from Australia on 30th December 1915 for Alexandria then proceeded to France and disembarked in Marseilles on 8th June 1916. He was reported missing in action on the 11th April 1917.

John was captured by the Germans in Reincourt and interned at Limburg, Germany as a prisoner of war. He was repatriated, and arrived in England 15th December 1918.

John then returned to Australia per the Medic April 1919.
