Alick Robert was born in Manly. He was 32½ years old and a plumber by trade at enlistment on 24th February 1915. His mother Isabel Buckley lived at 2 Wentworth Street, Manly. Alick embarked from Sydney on the H.M.A.T. A40 Ceramic on 25th June 1915. He was promoted to Lance Corporal temporarily, then permanently on 15th December 1916 and was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery in the field on 3rd April 1917. Alick was then wounded in action at Lagnicourt on 20th April 1917. He received shell wounds to his right arm which turned to gangrene and it had to be amputated above the elbow.

Alick’s name was Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazetteon the 15th May 1917 as a name deserving special mention. On the 13th December 1917 he returned to Australia per the H.M.A.T. Beltana and was discharged due to medical unfitness on the 11th June 1918.

Alick’s brother Leslie James also served but died from wounds received in action in 1915.
