Mr Buckley was born in Warringah, and was a linesman pre-war. His mother, Mrs Isabella Buckley lived at 2 Wentworth Street, Manly. His brother, Alick Buckley, was a well-known rugby footballer. He enlisted on 26 April 1915, aged 23 years, six months, and was taken on the strength of the 3rd Bn 4 August 1915.

He was shot in the legs on 7 August 1915, and died at a field hospital in Alexandria five days later.
