William Leslie Carney was 21 years old and a laborer by trade at enlistment on 22nd May 1915. William was declared missing from 7th to 12th August 1915. On 24th August 1915 he was slightly wounded then on 28th he was hospitalized suffering from a bomb wound to the eye and a septic hand. William was admitted to a London hospital on 12th September 1915.

He then returned to Australia per the Star of England on 12th December 1915. On 7th July 1916 he returned to duty. William was discharged from the Australian Imperial Force due to medical unfitness on 28th November 1916.
