Mr Cholerton was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He spent seven years with the Royal Navy Signallers, then became a sanitary inspector with Manly Council, and asked for his salary to be made up by the Council when he enlisted. His wife Ella Carlotta Cholerton lived at 10 Pacific Parade, Manly, then moved interstate to Melbourne.

He was wounded in France, and died of leg wounds in hospital at Stratford-on-Avon, England on 9 May 1917. He was buried in his home city of Sheffield; his mother, sisters and brother attended the funeral. His wife later returned to Manly to live at 15 the Corso.
