Norman Thomas John Craven was born in Balmain and was 20 years and 2 months at enlistment on 27th June 1915. Norman was an electrician by trade and lived at 7 Parkview Road, Manly with his parents Thomas Wilson and Mary Ellen Craven. Norman embarked from Sydney on the H.M.A.T. Ballarat on 9th September 1915. He served with the 20th Battalion on the Gallipoli peninsula.

On 6th February 1917 Norman was wounded in action in Boulogne, France with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transferred to hospital in Birmingham, England then returned to Australia per the Karoola on 3rd July 1917. Norman was discharged on 26th September 1917 due to medical complications from his abdominal wound. His younger brother John Herbert Craven also served and returned to Australia.
