Albert Edward Cruttenden was born in Hastings, England and was 26 years and 8 months old at enlistment on 11th October 1915. He was a clerk by trade and lived with his wife Ida Catherine at “Rothesay”, East Esplanade, Manly and then at “Namoi”, 26 High Street, Manly. Albert embarked from Sydney on the Persic on 30th May 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on 25th July 1916. He was promoted from Driver to Corporal then Seargent on 18th November 1916.

Albert was admitted to hospital in France with influenza on 31st December 1917. On 18thJanuary 1919 he was returned to Australia per the Ulysses due to debility from rheumatic pain. Albert was discharged on the 24th April 1919 in consequence of medical unfitness.
