Herbert George Daley was born in Richmond, and was 21 years and 4 months old at enlistment on 13th September 1916. Herbert was a telephone engineer by trade and lived at Albert Street, Harbord with his mother Marie Gertrude Bullock. He embarked from Sydney per the Ascanius on 25th October 1916, disembarking in Devonport on 28th December 1916. On 16thJanuary 1917 he was promoted to Acting Seargent. Herbert reverted to Private and proceeded overseas to France per the Folkstone on 14th March 1917.

On 15th April 1917 he was wounded in France with severe gun-shot wound to the back. Herbert was transported per the Princess Elizabeth and admitted to the Military hospital in Eastbourne, England. On 8th December 1917 he was appointed Lance Corporal in France then on the 13th March 1918 he was promoted again to Seargent. Herbert embarked on the Macedonia for Australia on 31st October 1919 and was discharged on 20th December 1920.
