Claude Milton Davis was born in Junee, New South Wales and was a coal-lumper by trade. Claude lived with his mother Annie Mary Davis at 30 Pacific Parade, Manly, Annie later relocating to 15a Pacific Street, Manly.

He enlisted on 19th July 1915 at 22 years and 7 months, embarking from Australia on 9th November 1915. Claude disembarked in Suez Egypt per the Beltana. On 28th March 1916 he received punishment for insubordination, forfeiting 3 days’ pay. On 23rd June 1916 Claude disembarked in Marseilles, France per the Hororata.

He was wounded in action in France on 20th July 1916 with a gun-shot wound to the arm and admitted to the 13th General Hospital, Boulogne. On 28th October 1916 Claude was again wounded in action in the field with gun-shot wounds to the back and shoulder. He also contracted V.D. and spent a total of 58 days in hospital recovering. Claude returned to Australia on 13th April 1919 from Liverpool, disembarking on 3rd June 1919.
