Edwin Dunlop was born at Sydney in 1886. He was a farmer prior to enlisting. His mother, Mrs Emily Dunlop, lived at Manly Villa, East Esplanade.

He enlisted on 23 August 1915 and embarked on 20 December 1915. He was reported wounded in France on 19 July 1916, but it was later found that he had been taken prisoner of war.

He was a POW at Levantie until repatriation. He returned to Australia on 5 March 1919 on the Nevasa.
