Mr Dunn was born at Manly. He was a carpenter’s apprentice to Mr M J Campbell. He enlisted on 10 January 1916 aged 20 and 2 months. His mother was Mrs Emily Dunn of Hawthorn, Brisbane Street, and later St Omer, Edwin Street.

Gunner Dunn served with a Howitzer battery. He was wounded in action in France on 17 November 1917. On 21 January 1918, he was buried in a shell blast which destroyed his dugout. He died of wounds on 4 July 1918 in France.

He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field, on 13 September 1918, which was awarded posthumously.

His brother John also died in WWI. They are commemorated on a headstone in Manly Cemetery, plot B.271.
