David Etherington was born at Ourimbah, NSW in 1894. He worked as a station hand prior to enlisting. His mother, Mrs Mary Anne Etherington lived at Sydney Road, Manly.He enlisted on 10 January 1916, and served in the Field Artillery.

He embarked on the Borda on 5 June 1916. He was wounded in action in France on 22 July 1917, and again in Belgium on 24 October 1917. He returned to Australia on the Aeneas on 21 May 1919.
