Joseph Evans was born at Brighton, Victoria. He was a junior reporter with the Sun newspaper prior to enlistment. His next of kin was his mother Mrs Heron, of Bolingbroke Parade, Manly.

He enlisted on 18 January 1915, but was discharged after seven days. He re-enlisted on 29 March 1915, and served in the 20th Battalion.

He was promoted to Lance-Corporal in July 1916. In November 1916 he contracted trench foot, and in January 1917 mumps.

On 20 September 1917 he was wounded in action in France, and was wounded a second time on 31 August 1918. He returned to Australia in December 1918 on the Mamari. In 1967 his widow Violet was living on Lord Howe Island.
