Eric Evans was born in Petersham in 1895. He was an engineer’s clerk prior to enlisting. His mother lived at Birkley Road, Manly.

He enlisted on 9 September 1914. He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 October 1914. He was wounded at Gallipoli in the foot, on 26 April 1915, and invalided home to Australia on the Suevic.

He returned to service on the Wiltshire in April 1917. He was wounded in action in Belgium on 7 August 1917.

On 25 October 917, he was gassed in France. He was again wounded on 18 September 1918, with a severe neck wound. He returned to Australia on 15 January 1919 on the City of Exeter.
