Horace Fitzgerald was born at Brisbane in 1891. He was an electrical mechanic for the railways. His mother, Mrs Brunicardi, lived at Redfern; it is not known what his connection was to Manly.

He enlisted on 29 December 1915, and trained as a wireless operator with the 1st Australian Wireless Squadron. He was promoted to Corporal on 11 April 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on 20 May 1916, but was transferred to hospital at Bombay, suffering from a stomach obstruction.

He was returned to Australia where his discharge was approved on 29 May 1917.He did not attain the rank of Sergeant, contrary to the caption on attached photo.
