George Freeman was born in Brighton, England. He was a shipping clerk prior to enlisting.

He enlisted on 1 February 1915, aged 30, and gave as next of kin C Freeman of 49 Woods Parade, Manly. He served with the 17th Battalion at Gallipoli. He was transferred to the 5th Machine Gun Corps, and promoted to Lance-Corporal on 29 March 1915.

He was wounded severely in the right leg at Fleurs, France on 14 November 1916, and returned to Australia on the Suevic on 27 September 1917.

He was discharged on 11 March 1918. He died on 30 December 1932.
