Frank Gibbons was born in 1893, the son of Henry Gibbons, a builder in Manly. Frank became an engineer, and was living at home at Glen Albion, 7 Smith Street when he enlisted. He had been a member of Manly Rifle Club for five years and was an expert shot.

He enlisted on 9 October 1916, having been previously rejected on grounds of poor health, and embarked on the Suevic on 11 November 1916. He served with the 56th Battalion.

He was severely wounded at Polygon Wood on 26 September 1917. He was treated for syphilis in February 1918. In September 1918 he was hospitalised with a twisted ankle.

After the war he was seconded to the Graves Section, and married in England in October 1920. He did not return to Australia until July 1921, on the Borda.
