James Grace was born at Mortlake in 1887 and was a contractor; he was a brother of Frederick and Walter Grace.

He enlisted on 30 May 1915, giving as next of kin his father Charles of Frenchs Forest Road.

He served with the 2nd Battalion and was at Gallipoli. He was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 4 March 1916, and to Sergeant, in the field, on 18 October 1916.

He was invalided out of the lines on 7 February 1917 with ‘neurasthenia’.

He was returned to Australia on 4 May 1917 on the Miltiades, afflicted with shell-shock. Latterly he lived at Neutral Bay. He died on 17 December 1966.
