Joseph Greenberg was born at Leeds, England in 1893. He was a hairdresser. He enlisted on 10 May 1915 giving his next of kin as his mother, who resided at Cape Town.

He embarked on 25 June 1915. He contracted VD in November 1916, and later scabies. He served with the 19th Battalion then 17th Battalion.

He embarked on the Port Denison, and was discharged from service at Cape Town in April 1919.
