Noel Griffin was born at Maitland in 1896. He attended the Coronation of George V as one of the Australian Cadet Contingent in 1911. He was a medical student prior to enlisting. He enlisted on 21 March 1917, giving his next of kin as his mother Mrs Annie Griffin, Wynthorpe, East Esplanade.

He embarked on 28 October 1917 and served with the 6th Light Horse in Egypt. He was promoted to Sergeant on 15 May 1917.

He returned to Australia on the Demosthenes on 26 January 1919.
