Raymond Hawdon was born at Moruya, NSW in 1896. He was a postal assistant. He enlisted on 16 June 1915, supposedly with his father’s permission, although his father was dead. His mother was living at White Street, Manly.

He embarked on 5 October 1915 as a Private in the 18th Battalion, but was later transferred to the 18th Battalion. His skills as telegraphist were briefly used in the Signalling section.

He was severely wounded in the chest in France on 15 April 1918 and was invalided to Australia on 18 November 1918 on the Marathon.

He died in 1988, aged 92; he lived latterly at Punchbowl.
