Leonard Hawksford was born at Ryde. He was a motor mechanic to trade. He enlisted on 17 September 1914, giving his next of kin as his mother Jane, of 3 George Street, Manly.

He was assigned as Artificer to the Divisional Ammunition Park. He served throughout the war as an Artificer in various Supply Columns. He contracted VD in April 1916.

He was promoted to Corporal Artificer on 12 October 1917, and temporary Sergeant Artificer on 8 August 1918.

He was granted special 1914 leave in December 1918, and returned to Australia by the Port Lyttleton.
