William Hearne was born at West Ham, London in 1895. He served for a few months in the Royal Navy prior to the outbreak of war. He enlisted on 14 December 1914 giving his surname as Hearne.

He was wounded in the buttocks at Gallipoli on 9 August 1915, and later discharged from military service due to this injury. He re-enlisted on 14 April 1917, giving his next of kin as his wife Kathleen, of 19 Belgrave Street, Manly.

He embarked on the Canberra on 16 November 1917 and served as a Trooper with the 1st Light Horse, and later the 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance. He was fined several times on charges of disobedience, and had several spells in hospital relating to his old wound.

He returned to Australia from Suez on the Aeneason 2 January 1919.
