John Heaton was born at Manly in 1895. He joined the RAN in January 1914, but deserted from the Navy in April 1917. He enlisted in the Army on 16 April 1917 under the name of John Elliott, giving his next of kin as his mother Lillian Elliott; later he owned up to the surname Heaton.

He embarked on 10 May 1917. He served with the 13th Battalion and with the 14th FAB as a Gunner. He married Elizabeth Kane in Glasgow on 15 May 1919, and returned to Australia on the Ceramic on 9 August 1919.
