Edward Heaton was born at Balgowlah in 1891. He was a labourer. He enlisted on 4 March 1916 giving his father Edward, of Woodland Street, Balgowlah as next of kin.

He embarked on the Wiltshire on 22 August 1916. He served with the 13th Battalion. He was severely gassed on 23 October 1917 and spent several months recuperating. He was briefly AWOL in May 1918, then deserted from 19 August to 27 August. A court martial sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment and he served several months in a military prison at Rouen before being returned to Australia on the Euripides on 6 September 1919.
