Arthur Hellmann was born at Paddington in 1893. He was a mechanic. He enlisted on 17 August 1914, giving as next of kin his mother Laura who lived at Quinton Road, Manly.

He was in charge of horses held off-shore at Gallipoli. He suffered acute appendicitis and was invalided back to Australia for discharge in August 1915.

In October 1916 he paid his fare to South Africa, and enlisted in a South African cavalry regiment. He was discharged from this in England several months later.

He then enlisted in the King Edward’s Horse, and served two years with them, including 18 months at the front.

In the 1920s he lived in the Malay States, and became a captain in the Malay Rifles in 1930. He also served in WWII, and was at Tobruk and El Alamein.
