Francis Hole was born at Windsor, NSW in 1889. He was a clerk. His next of kin was his brother Karl, a bank manager.

He enlisted on 2 August 1915 and served as a Gunner with the 2nd Divisional Ammunition Column in the Middle East.

He contracted ethmoiditis and breathing problems, and was invalided out of service, returning to Australia on 12 April 1916 on the Karoola.After the war he married in 1929, and became an auctioneer at Taree.

He died in 1954 aged 69, leaving two sons.
