William Holtsbaum was a clerk with Manly Council, and had his Town Clerk’s certificate prior to the war. He enlisted on 6 August 1915, aged 21, giving as next of kin his father at 31 Alexander Street, Manly.

He embarked on 1 May 1916, serving with the Field Ambulance. He was reported wounded in action on 19 June 1917, possibly erroneously. He was sick in November 1917, and hospitalised with trench fever.

He was returned to Australia on the Kanownasuffering from debility, and was discharged from service on 21 November 1918.

He married in 1925, and became Shire Clerk of Blaxland.
